What CARM is about

CARM (Conversation Analytic Role-play Method) is an approach to communication skills training that can be adapted to any sort of workplace or institutional encounter. Its theoretical background is rooted in the methodologies of Conversation Analysis (CA). Instead of simulating role plays (as traditional methods for training and assessing communication skills use to do), CARM undertakes a forensic analysis of the constituent activities that comprise the complete interaction. This procedure helps to understand why certain professional encounters worked out better than others. The workshop will be led by Elizabeth Stokoe who developed CARM and who has won a Social Enterprise Award for it.

What our workshop is about

In the workshop participants will learn about the CARM method, how it can be used for training and coaching. As it aims to inform about possible career prospects within the field of applied linguistics, it is mainly addressed to Ph.D. students or Post-doctoral researchers. However, all participants are required to have profound knowledge in CA (nota bene: the workshop does not focus on basic knowledge about CA). In a variety of workplace settings, the participants ‘live through’ the same projects and hurdles as those in the recorded materials they’re listening to or watching. Because of the way CARM works, they’re able to identify the practices that work and those that don’t. Thanks to this evidence-based training, the participants learn how to apply their theoretical knowledge in order to be able to become a coach on their own. This workshop is the first CARM training to be held in Germany.

Participation and application

The workshop is best suited to Ph.D. students or post-doctoral researches with profound knowledge in CA, who have conducted CA research and a strong interest in applied linguistics.
Participation fee (including coffee breaks and workshop material; excluding costs for travel, accommodation, meals): 100€.
Number of participants: approx. 20.

Please be aware that during the registration process you will be asked to provide a short text (ca. 500 words) explaining your motivation and your background in CA.
